One Small Step Closer!

It has been three months, almost to the day, since Design Cause was born. In that time we have done a lot of work to realize the goals of the organization and things have been going well. Earlier this week we reached our first fundraising goal of $5,000! Although this amount is less than 7% of our total goal of $75,000 it is a big step in the right direction. Being able to reach this small mile stone tells us that other people are interested in, not only our inaugural project in Cameroon, but in the idea that design can be used for positive impact around the world.

This is exactly the kind of positive response I was hoping for when I started Design Cause. It hasn't been easy to raise money, and I have been doing a fair amount of figuring-it-out-as-I-go, but I'm so happy that the hard work is starting to pay off. There is real excitement about the work Design Cause is trying to do, and genuine concern about the people we are trying to help. I couldn't ask for anything more.

When I was working on design and development over a year ago I was naively hoping that the fundraising phase would just happen own its own. I really didn't want to be the person asking friends, family, and strangers for money because I thought it would make people angry. What I have found is that although fundraising is difficult, and it can be very hard to find that phase that ends in donation when you are standing in front of someone, it has been quite rewarding. Talking to people about the project and explaining the complexity of the problems and our solution for the structure, really makes me proud of what I have accomplished. I have found that fundraising is really connecting people to something they care about and creating a community around it, and when that community starts to come together it's pretty powerful.

Just like it will take a village to build the classrooms, it will take a community to raise the money. Thank you, so much, to everyone who has helped us get to where we are now. Being one step closer to our end goal is exciting and I'm hopeful that the momentum we have gained, will continue to build.

I'm looking forward to the long journey ahead. Join me as we turn an idea into reality, build a community of supporters, and provided needed assistance to a village in Cameroon.
